Huge Upper Cretaceous olistostromes, with a stratigraphic thickness close to two kilometres, crops out along an 80-km-long belt extending from North of Haymana to the Mira Mountain North of Bağlum. The Kargabedir olistostromes are stratigraphically underlain by the Karakaya Complex. The olistostromes include blocks exceeding 600 m in size; and 90% of the blocks are made up of pelagic limestones. Paleontological studies have shown the presence of limestones blocks of Callovian-Oxfordian, Tithonian-Berriasian, Aptian, Albian, Cenomanian and Turonian ages. The Kargabedir Olistostromes are stratigraphically overlain by the ophiolitic mlange made up of basalt, chert, serpentinite and limestone. The Kargabedir Olistostromes and the ophioltitic melange were emplaced into the basin during the latest Turonian – Coniacian and were later unconformably overlain by Santonian red pelagic limestones. During the early Campanian the region was deformed, uplifted and eroded followed by the deposition during the middle-late Campanian of continental sediments, rudist-bearing limestones and flysch. These geological features will be studied during the field trip along newly opened roads in the Kargabedir-Alcı and Bağlum regions.

The field trip will involve up to one hour long walks; lunch will be eaten in the field.

Kızılcahamam - Çamlıdere Geopark Project and Its Significant Geosites

A Daily Geological Field Trip, April 15, 2017, 8.00-17.00
Attendance is limited for 30 seats, lunch will be a picnic, Fee is 45 TL

Kızılcahamam – Çamlıdere Geopark which is about 70 km at the northwest of Ankara covers an area of ca 2000 km2 in hintherlands of towns Kızılcahamam, Kazan and Çamlıdere. The main topic of the geopark is volcanism and related geological formations. The area is on a transition zone between the semi-arid central Anatolian plateau and the mountainous and wet northern Anatolia; therefore, a rich fauna and flora have been formed in a sharp morphology. The Soğuksu National Park has been founded 1959 in order to conserve the special ecology.  Moreover, the region has been of interest since ancient times and it was used by Hitites, Friges, Galatians, Romes and Turks. Many tumulus and hoyuks (ancient settlements) were relicts of these old civilisations. Kızılcahamam-Çamlıdere Geopark project includes some vulnerable geosites of fish, leave and insect fossils, petrified fossil forest in addition to multi-layered basalt columns, travertines of thermal water, erosional features (fairy chimneys, rock bride, twin turtles, etc) and a four- floors ground city. The geopark can be visited either as three geotours or four georutes from south to north. In this fieldtrip only five of twenty-three geosites will be examined.

The field trip will involve up to half-hour long walks.
